Russell matriculated at Benoni High School in 1992. In 1996 he obtained the BCom qualification from the University of South Africa (Unisa), and in 2000 obtained the Program in Investment Analysis and Portfolio Management from Unisa. In 2006 he graduated from the Institute of Marketing Management's Graduate School of Marketing with a post-graduate Diploma in Marketing.

Russell joined BDO on 1 October 2008. Prior to that he spent 13 years with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), initially as an articled clerk and then as the firm's Proposals Manager. When he left PwC he was an Associate Director with responsibility for Marketing & Communication across the firm on a national basis.

Russell is a member of the BDO International Brand & Marketing Committee (IBMC), and is also a member of the Johannesburg office Executive Committee.
