20 October 2017

On Wednesday we saw the largest data leak in South African history and yes, you are almost certainly affected.

By the numbers:

66 million South African citizens information was downloaded from a database backup hosted publicly on the internet.

57 million living and 9m deceased
12.5 million of those are children as young as three.
Below are some of the fields that were captured:
10 digit ID number
Title
First name
Surname
Gender
Age Group
Population Group
Location
Marital Status
Estimated Income
Home ownership
Directorship
Most recent physical address
Cel number
Work Number
Email address
Occupation
Employer name

What does this mean for you?

In short, you are much more likely to receive unsolicited emails and phone calls but more importantly it becomes increasingly easy for criminals to commit identity theft and fraud. Consider how many security questions an attacker can answer about you with this information. From there they can potentially apply for a lone in your name or ask for a copy of your sim card to be sent to them.
