Fuel levy and the Road Accident Fund

20 February 2019

Cliff Watson, Director |

The Finance Minister announced an increase in the general fuel levy by 15 cents per litre and the RAF by 5 cents per litre, with effect 3 April 2019. From 5 June 2019, a carbon tax of 9 cents per litre on petrol and 10 cents per litre on diesel, will be introduced. The carbon tax will not be claimable through the diesel refund scheme and will be an additional cost for primary production industries such as farming, mining, and forestry. This results in the tax component contained in the pump price of 93 octane petrol increasing to nearly 41% (compared to nearly 35% last year), and for diesel increasing to nearly 42% (compared to nearly 37% last year).
