Sugar Tax Levy

Whilst most tax collections fell short of budget, a tax that bucked this trend is the Sugar Tax or Health Promotion Levy. Budget 2018 announced expected revenue generated of around R1.7 billion in its first year. Actual revenue, however, is forecasted to amount to approximately only R3.4 billion! To further discourage the consumption of sugary drinks, the Minister today introduced an inflationary increase to the levy, effective 1 April 2019. It will not be surprising if the Sugar Tax revenue continues its upward trend.
