At the 2020 Dealmakers gala awards* BDO Corporate Finance achieved its best results to date

26 February 2020

The team, headed by Nick Lazanakis, achieved an impressive first place in the M&A deal value ranking by transactional support services adviser, both in the deal flow and deal value categories, having advised on transactions to the value of R39.4 billion.

In the general corporate finance categories, BDO once again achieved a first place in the transactional support services category by deal flow, and a second place by deal value, having advised on 17 deals to the value of R11.2 billion.

The biggest accolade, however, was BDO’s involvement as a transaction support service adviser on the Dealmakers deal of the year, being Pepsico’s acquisition of Pioneer Foods, the maker of well-known brands such as Weet-Bix, Liqui-Fruit and Safari. The R23.63 billion transaction is one of PepsiCo’s largest acquisitions outside of the US.

Among the deals concluded during 2019 on which BDO Corporate Finance worked (besides Pepsico’s acquisition of Pioneer Foods) are the acquisition of Rolfes by Phatisa Food Fund II, Barloworld’s Khula Sizwe Property deal, Trencor’s unbundling of its shares in Textainer, the simplification of Sabvest’s dual share structure and the unwind of Spur’s BEE transaction with Grand Parade.

Besides having achieved stellar results, this is also BDO Corporate Finance’s first year as a member of the Dealmakers oval table, which is an invitation-only seat among five other corporate finance players and four corporate law firms.

The Dealmakers gala awards is an annual event which covers all of the deals concluded during the 2019 calendar year end to celebrate deal making achievements in the M&A and General Corporate Finance sectors by recognising individuals and teams who have contributed to deal activity in the South African region. The M&A category is considered the most prestigious whereas the General Corporate Finance category covers corporate actions undertaken by an issuer only (i.e. no counterparty).
