James started his career in the accounting profession when he joined Welby Steward as an article Clerk in 1977. He progressed through the ranks to become a partner in 1983 and later to serve as Managing Partner between 1996 and 2002. He continues in his role as Partner at BDO Cape Town, since the 2018 merger of Grant Thornton Cape with BDO South Africa.
In addition to being a qualified Chartered Accountant, James holds an honours degree in Data Processing and is a Certified Financial Planner.
James runs a diverse audit client base, with his experience encompassing a number of sectors such as civil engineering, hospitality, wine farming, fruit farming and exporting, manufacturing and fishing. He has extensive experience in advising a number of successful entrepreneurial clients on business and other issues.
James has professional memberships with SAICA (South African Institute of Chartered Accountants) and the Financial Planning Institute.
He is an active person and completed fifty marathons (including the Two Oceans 10 times) during his road-running career. He also spends time touring the country on his Harley Davidson
