Jan is the BDO Insurance Industry leader, bringing over 25 years’ big 4 experience in auditing, due diligence, quality control reviews and advising various financial services clients, with a specific focus on Insurance. He was instrumental in guiding his insurance clients with the implementation of IFRS 17. Jan gained valuable insights into the medical scheme industry through his three-year tenure as the Discovery Health Medical Scheme (DHMS) Chief Financial Officer. He is also a member of the SAICA Insurance Project Group.

Group / Multinational audit experience

Jan has extensive experience leading and coordinating audits of large, complex insurance and financial services groups, including entities operating across multiple jurisdictions and regulatory environments. He has directed group audit engagements involving numerous component auditors, ensuring consistent risk assessment, audit execution, reporting, and quality standards across the group. His experience includes overseeing the audit of consolidated financial statements, evaluating component auditor work, and addressing complex group reporting and technical accounting matters, including IFRS 17 implementation. Jan regularly engages with boards, audit committees, regulators, and senior management teams to provide assurance over group financial reporting and governance processes.
