Michiel Jonker is a director in the Advisory department. He is a member of the firm’s Digital Transformation Team, and is also an innovation champion, contributing to the BDO International Innovation drive. As a trained Futurist, Michiel writes on a regular basis on different topics, ranging from technology and innovation to other futuristic and strategic matters.
Prior joining the firm, Michiel spent nine years in the medical scheme / insurance industry. He also developed an e-commerce web site in 2005 and finished an e-book on risk management principles for small and medium businesses in 2006. In 2007 Michiel joined Grant Thornton Johannesburg as a manager and was promoted to director in 2013. In December 2018 Grant Thornton Johannesburg merged with BDO, and he is currently heading up the IT Advisory division in Johannesburg. He is now responsible for a wide variety of assignments, ranging from IT audits, corporate governance, business risk strategy formulation, IT security and privacy reviews, business continuity and disaster recovery planning, policy assessments/implementations, business process reviews, to strategic advice to clients.
Michiel strongly believes that every business can maximise its chances of success by not only applying appropriate risk management strategies, but also by incorporating foresight into its strategic thinking (so as to identify new business opportunities).
Michiel has extensive experience in a variety of assignments for both private (both listed and non-listed) and public sector organisations, with experience in the following industries: e-commerce; insurance; retail; healthcare; manufacturing; construction; agriculture; tourism; banking, mining, as well as national, provincial and local government.
