“I have watched our industry evolve from a policy-flogging approach into financial planning. At BDO, the advice is the product, rather than an insurance policy or an investment. It’s a shift of mindset from hitting sales targets, to building long-term relationships, developing a more holistic view, where you look at all aspects of the client’s financial affairs. I had a major accident in 2008, where I damaged my spinal cord in the neck. So today I’m a quadriplegic. I spent several months in ICU and in rehab, at a period that coincided with the global financial crisis. That whole scenario was interesting because I was now the client. I was disabled, but I had a business to run, staff to look after, family and children to school. Luckily, I had a good advisor – myself! The fact that I emerged from that experience intact, with my finances still healthy, is testament to the plans that had been put in place. I advise my clients on the same principles that have served me well in my life.”
