What is ‘whistleblowing?’
Whistleblowing is where an employee or a third party exposes misconduct within the workplace, such as dishonesty, mismanagement, fraud, bullying, sexual harassment, corruption, illegal or unethical behaviour. Whistleblowing can occur internally to management or externally to the regulatory authorities including the South African Police Services (SAPS) or even the media.

The purpose of a tipoff or whistleblowing 'line' is to eradicate unacceptable behaviour in the workplace. Tipoffs are one of the most common means of detecting organisational wrongdoing. According to the Association of Fraud Examiners (ACFE) Report to the Nations (2020 Global Study on Occupational Fraud and Abuse) and research across 125 countries and 2 504 cases, it is estimated that losses of an estimated $3.6 billion arise from occupational fraud.
